A BRAND new look for St Albans City station has now been unveiled.

Mayor of St Albans Cllr Chris Oxley joined Network Rail and First Capital Connect (FCC) representatives for the ceremony, when the station's 5 million upgrade was declared officially open.

The upgrades, which took 18 months to complete, focus on integrating transport between rail, bus, bicycle and car and include a new multi-storey car park with over 800 spaces and additional facilities for cycles and motorbikes.

In addition, the revamped station has a larger entrance and ticket office to reduce congestion and three new passenger lifts have been installed providing access to all platforms. A new low-level ticket counter for wheelchair users and increased CCTV and lighting are also included among the improvements.

Managing Director of FCC Jim Morgan said: "The improvements make this station one of the best in terms of integration with other forms of transport and accessibility. Further investment will follow as part of the Thameslink Programme with new, longer trains arriving at extended platforms.
