A SCHOOLGIRL has found the recipe for success and won the local heat of a national competition to find the Rotary Club's Young Chef 2010.

Liz Allen, aged 16, from Marlborough School in St Albans, cooked up a storm in front of top judges James Chapman, executive chef at Sopwell House, and Eric Moboti, head chef at St Michaels Manor.

She started with salmon and avocado layer starter, followed by a roast rack of lamb with herb crust and finished with apple tart.

The competition is part of a partnership between the Rotary Club and Philippo Berio Olive Oil Company to promote healthy eating among young people.

Liz, who beat eight other competitors to win the heat, will progress on to a district competition and if she triumphs there could end up in the final for Great Britain.

She won't be doing it on her own though - James Chapman has agreed to give her some personal advice to help her in the next round of the competition.

The Rotary Club of St Albans is calling on young local photographers to enter their snaps into a free competition.

The theme is The Environment and the club is accepting both digital and traditional film snaps. Up for grabs is a 30 prize voucher to spend at Clarks Cameras in Holywell Hill.

The competition is designed to encourage young people to experiment with photography and the winning entries will be displayed on the Rotary market stall in St Albans High Street.

Anyone aged between seven and 17 can enter and should send their pictures to rotaryphotocomp@live.co.uk.
