HOURS of work spent organising a community event were rewarded when the young organisers of last year’s St Albans Mela were presented with certificates.
Outgoing Mayor of St Albans, Cllr Chris Oxley, handed out the awards to mark the success of the Asian multicultural festival held in Clarence Park last September which was aimed at bringing together all members of the community to celebrate Asian culture.
The event was the first and only mela in the UK to be solely organised by young people who were supported by St Albans district council.
The young group, aged 14 to 19, spent over a year planning the event designed to show the diversity of the district.
On the day a combination of award-winning food, world renowned poets and chart-topping headlines made the mela a great success which attracted well over a thousand people.
In addition to organising the event, the young people raised money for two local charities - Grove House hospice and Kashmir Deaf Children Trust.
