A CITY centre pub has closed down and there is now speculation that developers want to convert it for residential use.
The Verulam Arms, in Lower Dagnall Street, St Albans, has been out of action for at least a month and the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) has heard strong rumours that a planning application for a change of use is in the pipeline.
A spokesperson for CAMRA said this week that the pub, which he understands had been sold on by Punch Taverns within the last couple of years, had been thriving and proved how a pub could marry the sale of food and alcohol successfully.
He said: βIt always managed to mix serving good food and good beer and it was a great asset to that part of St Albans. It will be a great loss.β
