FIREFIGHTERS spent the night tackling a large fire engulfing a hay stack in a field.
Both crews from St Albans fire station were called to the scene in a field at the junction of Harper Lane and Shenleybury just after 6pm and found a 20 metre by 10 metre stack of hay on fire along with some of the surrounding stubble.
The firefighters put out the flames engulfing the grass but let the haystack fire burn itself out through the night, remaining on the scene to ensure that it didn’t spread.
They left the scene at about midnight but crews have revisited the scene through the morning to check that the fire had not reignited.
The cause of the blaze is being treated as doubtful.
