A CHARITY shop in St Albans has received a rare book worth thousands of pounds.

Helmut Newton SUMO has been dubbed the world’s largest, most expensive and most sought after photobook, featuring hundreds of photos from the prolific fashion photographer, who died in 2004.

A signed, original copy of the book, one of only 10,000 released in 1999, was donated to Oxfam, in Catherine Street, last week.

Some websites have estimated the book to be worth between 5,000 and 9,000.

Shop manager Pauline Wilby said: “It has been on display on a special stand and has been getting a lot of attention; everyone has been coming in and talking about it.”

The book is now due to go to auction where it is hoped it will fetch around 2,000 to go towards the charity’s vital work.

Pauline continued: “We would really like the man who donated the book to get in touch with us so that we can thank him and get the sale gift aided.”
