PETROL panic buying has swept across the St Albans district over the last 24 hours amid fears of a possible strike by tanker drivers.

Herts Ad readers have been reporting queues at several petrol stations across the district, including the BP garage in North Harpenden, Batford Tesco and the Shell garages in Chiswell Green, Redbourne and near to the King William pub in St Albans.

The majority of fuel tanker drivers represented by union UNITE have voted in favour of strikes over a range of issues including safety and pay. However, no date has been set for the action and at least seven days notice must be given before a walkout can take place.

The Government has been heavily criticised after urging motorists and businesses to “have contingency plans in place”, which has led to many stockpiling fuel.

Chief Fire Officer for Hertfordshire, Roy Wilsher, has warned people of the dangers of storing fuel at home.

He said: “I don’t think people realise the explosive risks involved in storing fuel, even if it is done legally and sensibly. We would strongly advise Hertfordshire residents not to stock up on petrol. Given the small amount that is legal to store it’s hardly worth the enormous risk to lives and property.”
