GETTING planning permission for a new budget hotel in the city centre proved to be no easy task for Premier Inns.

But parent company Whitbreads’ success at the third attempt last year is now showing tangible results with work underway on the demolition of buildings in Drovers Way, St Albans, ready for work on the 123-bedroom hotel in St Peter’s Street to begin in September.

It is scheduled to open next summer and will be the first budget hotel in the district.

Heavy plant has been demolishing the rear of former retail outlets like Bon Marché and McDonald’s and the offices above them ready for the start of work on the hotel which got planning permission after reducing the height of the building by removing the gym from the original proposal.
