Plans to convert a former care home into flats for the homeless have officially been submitted to the council.
The proposals would see St Claire’s in Church Crescent, St Albans, turned into a ten unit HMO (House in Multiple Occupation).
Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association, who submitted the plans, hope to house homeless people who would otherwise be in B&B accommodation.
The original plans included 17 more smaller units, but have been amended following a public consultation in October last year.
The proposals, which would rely on local authority subsidies, initially stirred controversy.
About 30 people attended the original consultation, including objector Lucy Povoas, who warned that the proposal would fundamentally change the “security, stability and character of the immediate area no matter the safeguards and precautions” promised by Hightown.
