One Race for Life is often enough for most people. But for Alice Lowe, who will be tackling the 5km route starting in Verulamium Park today, one would just not do.
The 21 year old will be completing her tenth in as many weeks to raise money for Cancer Research UK after her grandad died of lung cancer on Christmas Eve.
She said: “I decided one wasn’t enough to respect him properly and I know that he would have thought that 5km is pathetic - so I decided to do 10.”
Alice completed her first Race for Life in Aylesbury on May 17. Since then she has completed eight 5km across the south-east.
Having eclipsed her £1,000 target already, Alice is now keen to raise as much money as possible for the charity.
She said: “Last year I lost someone very close to me - my amazing fit healthy grandad was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away five days later.”
If the prospect of running 10 races was not daunting enough, shortly after her first race Alice was diagnosed with severe hypothyroidism. Symptoms include fatigue, muscle weakness and slowed heart rate.
