Following the government’s commitment to take 20,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years, the district council is calling on private landlords with self-contained local property to come forward.

The council revealed: “If shared equally across all areas of the county, [the government’s pledge] might mean about 100 people a year coming to Hertfordshire, or 10 per district.

“We hope to be able to welcome people from the same family or community to help people feel more at home.”

Despite many people from the district coming forward to offer spare rooms in family homes, the scheme does not extend to shared accommodation of this type.

And due to the long waiting lists associated with residential council properties, the district council is urging landlords from the private sector to come forward.

“Some people may be able to offer accommodation for free. But the council also wants to hear from people with appropriate property to rent, as we expect the government will provide a contribution towards the cost.”

Cllr Brian Ellis said: “The council stands ready to play its full part. We expect to receive firm details soon and are writing to offer our commitment and support.

“In the meantime, we are seeking help to find family-sized, self-contained accommodation and have contacted private sector landlords with this in mind.”

Anyone who feels they may be able to offer accommodation is urged to contact the council via email on housingoptions@stalbans.gov.uk or on 01727 819355.
