Bake Off’s Mary Berry will be inviting TV audiences to judge the Alban Bun on her new Easter Feast series next week.
The TV cook and Bake Off judge visited St Albans Cathedral in January to film for next Tuesday’s episode which features the Alban Bun, believed to be the original hot cross bun.
Legend has it that it originated in St Albans Abbey where 14th century monk, Brother Thomas Rocliffe, developed it using an original - and still closely guarded - recipe and distributed it to the local poor on Good Friday from 1361.
It has been part of the Easter tradition at the cathedral for 700 years and the buns are on sale in the Abbot’s Kitchen until Easter Monday.
These days the buns are produced by Redbournbury Mill, which was once owned by the Abbey. They are faithful to the 14th century recipe with only a slight addition of extra fruit.
