Happy to be home and open for business is the message from a charity hub which was forced to move out over a dispute with the landlords.
Community Meeting Point (CMP) had to leave its premises in Station Road, Harpenden, in April when Hightown Housing Association, which runs the charity, were denied access following a rent issue with the landlord, TEJ Properties.
CMP moved temporarily into the United Reformed Church in Vaughan Road, Harpenden, and the High Street Methodist Church in the town centre and were able to continue the service thanks to volunteers, staff and members bringing in their own equipment.
But now the dispute has been resolved and CMP moved back into the Station Road premises last Tuesday.
Hightown’s support worker, Angela Greenaway, said it had been an unsettling time for CMP members as many were dependent on routine and stability.
She added: “It was fantastic to see how the volunteers and members pulled together to maintain a structure and keep everyone’s spirits up. Many of them have been with the service for several years and they’ve built up strong relationships.”
Long-term CMP member Bob Cherry has written a letter to thank those involved. He said: “I would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to the local churches that have offered shelter and support. They have gone the distance in keeping our service open.
“Special credit should be given to the members who use the service for their perseverance at such a difficult time. Hightown must also be praised for their commitment to our charity. Without their help and support CMP would not exist.”
CMP offers support and a range of activities to 26 local people with mental health issues and it runs a charity shop to raise funds for its work. Volunteers would welcome any donations to help boost the shop’s stock.
A reunion party to thank members and volunteers for the support during the past six weeks took place during National Volunteers Week.
