Rain did not deter locals from attending a range of services marking Armed Forces Day on Saturday (25), including at the War Memorial outside St Mary’s in Marshalswick, on Harpenden Common, and at the parish centre in Bricket Wood.
Don Dell, chairman of the St Albans branch of the Royal British Legion, said that the Mayor, Cllr Frances Leonard, joined local sea and air cadets at the service held by Father Grant at Marshalswick.
Another anniversary service is being hosted in St Albans tomorrow (Friday) when people mark 100 years since the start of the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest fights in human history.
The Royal British Legion has organised a remembrance event at the war memorial at the top of St Peter’s Street.
It will take place at 7.20am when a whistle will be blown, the Kohima Epitaph will be read and silence marked.
The Mayor will be present and all are welcome to attend and help mark the anniversary.
The Union flag will be flown at half-mast at the top of the Alban Arena and at the legion’s local branch headquarters in Verulam Road.
Don said: “Everyone is welcome to join us at the war memorial to mark the anniversary of the start of this World War One battle. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives in the battle which lasted until 18 November 1916.”
