A college student from St Albans has become something of an internet sensation as a rap he performed in memory of his teenage friend who died in a tragic car accident keeps growing in popularity.

Harley Tobias, a former Beaumont School pupil who went on to attend Links AP Academy, suffered a serious head injury during an early morning collision in Marshal’s Drive in October last year.

The popular 16 year old died at St Mary’s Hospital in London, less than a week before his 17th birthday.

One of his many friends, Lewis Montgomery-Moore, 17, decided to create a rap for Harley, as he felt the teenager’s story had to be “put out there”, for people to relate to.

After discussing his ideas with Harley’s mum, Eve, they both decided it would be a great idea to share it online.

However, such has been the success of his YouTube video - with his rap racking up over 20,000 views - Lewis may have to re-think his career options.

He recently began a college degree in Public Services at Oaklands College in St Albans.

Lewis told the Herts Advertiser that while he had received recognition as a result of his rap for Harley, it was important that its message - essentially a tribute to his friend - was understood.

In it, Lewis alludes to his struggle to comprehend his death, and the difficulty in coming to terms with it.

Feedback to the rap on YouTube includes comments such as: “This is really good! You are amazing you need to make more of these your gunna [sic] be a star”, and many others feel the same way.

Lewis said that his lyrics allow people to feel like they have somebody to relate to, particularly those who feel alone, as “many are in similar situations and are struggling, but with my rap, nobody’s alone”.

And it appears that Lewis has a bright future with his music, as he has recently received interest from Lante Music - a popular urban music label based in London.

He now hopes to continue rapping as his budding basketball career has recently been marred by injury.
