The Davis Cup arrived in St Albans on Sunday as part of a national tour to celebrate Great Britain’s historic win of the Davis Cup in 2015 - the first time in 79 years.
Batchwood Sports Centre arranged a community event in St Peter’s Street to coincide with the arrival of the trophy and to inspire a new generation of St Albans residents to try the game. More than 1,500 people took part in inflatable tennis, mini tennis court games, family activities and face painting.
Live coverage from this year’s Davis Cup competition was played on a 30ft screen in the city centre giving the opportunity for everyone to watch the GB team in action against Argentina.
Leisure portfolio holder Cllr Annie Brewster said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to see the Davis Cup following Great Britain’s win last year. The crowds also had great fun taking part in variety of tennis-related games organised by the team from Batchwood Sports Centre. If you are interested in trying out tennis or improving your game why not visit the LTA high performance tennis centre? There are classes and sessions for all ages and levels of experience.”
