There is a vacancy among the politicians at St Albans council after a councillor recently announced he was quitting.

Sam Rowlands, who has represented Clarence ward in St Albans since last year, said he had decided to stand down for personal reasons.

He went on: “It has been a privilege to have represented Clarence ward. I would like to thank my colleagues and council officers for their help. I wish my successor well.”

After Sam was elected in May 2015, he joined his father, Anthony Rowlands, who represents Ashley ward for the Lib Dems.

• The council has reminded householders to ensure they have returned voting registration forms. Almost 60,000 enquiry forms were posted to homes district-wide during a recent annual canvas.

• While 32,000 forms have been returned, the other 28,000 have not yet replied. If no changes are needed, residents still need to confirm this online at: www.householdresponse.com/stalbans
