A keen fundraiser has spent five days cycling to raise money for an orphanage in Cambodia.
Graeme Bird, 37, who lives in Longacres, St Albans, tackled a gruelling 900km bike ride from Vientiane in Laos to Cambodia to raise money for Hope for Cambodian Children - a charity that cares for abandoned children.
He cycled for seven hours a day to reach the final destination, an orphanage in Battambang, which the charity focuses on helping.
Graeme joined a team of 30 cyclists on his fundraising quest and together they raised $110,000 (AUD).
He said: “It’s so hot and it was like 38 degrees and humid and that’s the struggle because you have to drink so much water just to help the body function.
“Everyone just has this ambition to get the end and to change these children’s lives and that’s what keeps you going.”
Graeme continued: “It’s an amazing cause because Cambodia is one of the poorest places in Asia.
“They had an Aids pandemic previously and so there are lots of children without parents and so the orphanage looks after these children.
“It’s not just about housing them, but schooling them as well while trying to expand and help develop the area.”
