A passing fire crew rushed to help after they saw a woman fall over in St Albans.
At around 3.15pm on Tuesday afternoon, the women, believed to be in her 70s, collapsed and hit her head on the kerb.
The crew were quickly joined by a private ambulance team, who had seen the fire engine pull up.
An ambulance was called for at 3.16pm, and the fire crew tried to keep the woman warm until it arrived.
East of England ambulance service dispatched a rapid response vehicle and ambulance crew to the scene.
When they arrived, she was treated for a head injury, before being taken to Watford general hospital for further care.
