An increase in the basic allowance for St Albans district councillors has been backed by the three major parties.
A vote on a one per cent increase to the allowance given to each councillor was passed at a St Albans council meeting on Wednesday.
Council leader Alec Campbell said: “We recognise the allowance is an important source of income for councillors.
“We do need to recognise and reward the contribution of councillors.”
St Albans council hold the highest number of meetings of any Herts district council.
Yet its members have not had an increase in their allowance in nine years.
The leader of the council’s Liberal Democrats, Anthony Rowlands, and the leader of Labour, Roma Mills, both agreed to support the increase.
All three thanked the Independent Remuneration Panel, a group of lay people who monitor councillor allowances.
