Visitors to a village’s winter flower festival stepped through the magic wardrobe to explore the land of Narnia.
Around 1,000 visitors from all over the county came to St Leonard’s Church in Flamstead last weekend to enjoy a festival based on the CS Lewis fantasy series in the run-up to Christmas.
Flamstead villagers showed their support for the event by helping with organisation, baking cakes and serving refreshments.
It took three days for arrangers from the St Albans Abbey Flower Guild and 10 other churches across the region to transform the church for the event, creating 80 different dried and fresh displays, covering the seasons from winter to summer.
Organiser Jackie Scopes said: “When the vicar persuaded me a year ago to organise a winter flower festival, it led me to the idea of a Narnia theme which binds the religious elements in with the artistic.”
She added: “Even though I’d designed it, I was absolutely astounded by the standards of what the arrangers produced. They really pulled out all the stops and the results were of cathedral quality. I am absolutely euphoric.”
