The fire service was called after a dustcart ignited on the M1 near Junction 6 for St Albans.
Two fire engines from Hemel Hempstead were called at 9.54am today (Thursday, April 5) to the dustcart fire.
The dustcart was on the M1 between Junction 6a for Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports and Dartford and Junction 6 for St Albans.
Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera and a hosereel to extinguish the blaze, which was caused by overheated brakes.
