No-one was hurt in the fire, which happened at 4.55pm in a flat on Hatfield Road.
Crews from Garston, St Albans, and Hatfield attended the incident.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels and one jet to extinguish the flames.
St Albans firefighters thanked Premier Inn for housing the affected family.
