A SPECIAL-needs school in St Albans is hoping to develop a BMX centre for the pupils - and as a start has just been given four new BMX bikes.

Batchwood School says the pupils have expressed a particular interest in BMX biking and the school hopes that the centre will help develop maturity as well as keeping the children fit.

The school has rewards in place to encourage positive behaviour among the students and when they earn reward points they can chose an enrichment activity.

Because of the interest in BMX biking, the school believes this will be one of the most popular activities.

The proposed BMX centre is designed to teach the pupils cycling proficiency. It will have ramps on the site with expert BMX riders coming in to teach the pupil riders bike tricks. They will go off-road riding and visit other centres.

To help get the project under way, Paul Williams of Rock and Road Bikes in Victoria Street, St Albans, has given the school the four new Barracuda BMX bikes. He will also help with finding trained BMX riders to teach their skills to the pupils.
