NEARLY £150,000 of unpaid council tax was written off by St Albans District Council last year.

Of this figure, 10 per cent was due to bankruptcy, 11 per cent to people moving abroad, 74 per cent was due to the liable person being untraceable and five per cent was down to miscellaneous reasons.

A council spokesperson pointed out that some of the debt was more than eight-years-old and 99 per cent of council tax was collected in St Albans.

"The council will not write off a debt until all avenues of recovery action have been exhausted," he added.
