A BAKER'S Dozen of new teachers have joined Harpenden secondary school this term - bringing the teaching complement to almost 100.
Most of the appointments at St George's School in Sun Lane are the result of the final year of the school's planned expansion and the growth in sixth form numbers as the roll increased by 60 this September.
At the forefront of welcoming the 13 newcomers has been school archivist, Mrs Pam Weatherley, who presented each with her new history of the school chapel which includes a CD showing the recent restoration work on the chapel murals and the details of the centenary window.
Originally written with the headmaster for the 1991 centenary of the chapel, the revised and greatly expanded version brings the story up to date and includes photographs of recent restoration work and the new layout of the altar area.
Changes to the chapel have resulted from the growth of the school which hit record numbers this week and the need to allow a greater variety of worship during weekday and Sunday services.
The new teachers, already nicknamed the St George's Baker's Dozen, are teaching a range of subjects. Three are former members of the school - Tom Wade and Hannah Goatly are past students and Gill Hall was previously data manager and is now teaching in the ICT department.
Head Norman Hoare said the school's Baker's Dozen were fascinated by Pam's scholarship and knowledge and added: "You can't be an effective member of this school unless you understand what our chapel means to us and Pam's new book is beautifully presented and tells an inspiring story.
