SIR, - The Herts Christmas drink-drive statistics (Herts Advertiser, January 12) raise some disturbing issues. One in 10 drivers were found to be above the legal alcohol limit, yet less than one driver in 50 involved in accidents was found to be over the same limit. Such a practice cannot possibly be condoned, but it seems that the persistent drink-drivers are significantly more careful on the roads than other drivers. This is most likely to be due to the fear of prosecution rather than the fear of having an accident. It is a shame that the risk of possibly killing fellow members of the community does not lead to all drivers taking such care at the wheel. RICHARD SMITH, Fellowes Lane, Colney Heath.
