SIR, - With no axe to grind and no shares in the company, I am writing to encourage use of the new Green Line bus route 712 to Central London. The fare is much cheaper than by rail and oldies with a bus pass travel free.

Quick? My driver crossed to the fast lane on the M1 at Bricket Wood and whizzed us to Baker Street (for Lord's cricket) in 44 minutes. West End shoppers are at Marble Arch a few minutes later and the line ends at Victoria.

No long promenades at St Panky, just door to door in comfort and with air-conditioning. 712 is the number, stop five, right by the Post Office. Go for it!
