SIR, - May I congratulate St Albans District Council on their up-grading of their pedestrian signs in the city centre.

Unlike the old signs which gave only the most basic information and often pointed in the wrong direction, the new fingerposts are both clear and helpful. The added information given such as the time it might take to walk to the station, taxi rank or public toilets is an added bonus for those visiting the city centre.

However, I am baffled why the council has not up-graded the signing from the City Station. In contrast to those arriving at Abbey Station, who are given clear information on how long it might take to walk to the city centre or Verulamium Museum, those arriving at the main line City Station are confronted by a vague sign pointing to shops and museums. The fact that Verulamium Museum is a mile-and-a-half away is not mentioned.

So please, can we have some clear signing from the City Station.

PETER WARES,

Ramsbury Road, St Albans.
