SIR - I read the article entitled "Riddle of Town's UFO Sighting" in your July 9 edition with interest. I too saw the flying objects on June 20, as in fact I had done last Christmas Day, and I am sorry to have to disappoint Neil McKenna and your readers but they are not UFOs. In fact they are "sky lanterns" which are miniature hot air balloons and there are numerous companies who sell them.
You simply remove the sky lantern from its outer sleeve and attach the small gas fuel cell underneath which you then light and release the balloon. They look particularly stunning as they float through the night sky when they are released in large groups and can last up to 20 minutes before they go out and are fully bio-degradeable.
