SIR, - The most appalling act of tree-butchery has been carried out along the railway line at the King William IV junction in St Albans.

The trees and undergrowth were an important wildlife habitat and provided a valuable leafy screen. Suddenly they have been hacked about in a way that cannot be justified on any grounds.

Quite likely some of them have been killed. What is Network Rail going to do to reinstate this area?
