He stands 10ft tall on the banks of the River Ver overlooking the lake in Verulamium Park.
He was created by arboretists with obvious artistic flair from what I believe was an ancient oak tree that was at least 200 years old, but had regrettably reached the end of its life.
It reminds me of a Roman soldier, wearing (ivy) armour and marching back to his city.
Just days after taking these photos, I saw two Chelsea pensioners in their bright red uniforms walking past the Verulamium Tree Man - what a picture that would have made... but my camera was at home!
