SIR - Although I sympathise regarding the plight of Michelle Hayes (Herts Advertiser, September 10) I feel I must point out that this is just part of a wider trend.
Over the last decade, various bodies have 'streamlined' sectors of local and national government, normally to the benefit of local business, but at taxpayers' expense.
For instance, local housing repairs were dealt with by an in-house team whereas now it is still put through the repairs team, but then has to be outsourced to a company (profit-making) to be dealt with.
Why fix something that isn't broken?
This government's concern with meddling with things that have worked OK is causing personal problems for many people.
Therefore is it not time that local government is left local and not decided by a quango in Brussels?
