SIR, - Re S. Barker's letter on traffic congestion and solutions (Herts Advertiser, March 13), the St Albans city-centre "enhancements" were not intended to help traffic flow; they were intended to slow down traffic to make the centre safer for pedestrians. One can only hope that the current resurfacing/improvements to Batchwood Drive are to precede intended extra use of this ring road.

I read with interest the front-page article on the new £25-million Butterfly World to be built in Chiswell Green, expecting one million yearly visitors. This will no doubt also bring huge numbers into St Albans as well. Our shops and businesses welcome them of course - but not their cars. A park-and-ride scheme must be put into place in the huge expanse of land at the bottom of Holywell Hill, with buses leaving for town every 10 minutes and ideally a bus lane up Holywell Hill as well. People will only use public transport if it is quick, efficient and comfortable. If buses get stuck with all the cars, then people won't bother.
