SIR. - I was saddened to read (Herts Advertiser, November 27) of the proposed closure by the Co-op of Balfour News including the branch post office in Southdown, Harpenden. Then I became very angry when I realised that if the Co op had voiced their intentions earlier, then the Batford post office might possibly have had a reprieve (Editor's Comment).
I understand that the Co-op are taking over the Somerfield group of supermarkets. I currently do the bulk of my shopping at the Southdown Somerfield store but, come the new year when I shall have to use the Station Road post office, I will make sure that my weekly shop is done at one of the town centre supermarkets. I urge any Southdown residents who feel the same to do likewise.

Field Close, Harpenden.
