SIR, - The suggestion from Charles Clegg (Herts Advertiser, April 24) that Harpenden might become annexed to South Luton and deservedly so, caused me to speculate who could be so nasty.

I imagine Charles Clegg to be a retired Army general or colonel type, with gout and a whole series of other afflictions which has left him both bigoted and xenophobic.

We happen to live near his given address and since your bold decision to publish his letter, we have looked out across the rooftops fearing to see plumes of smoke where once was Carlisle Avenue. As this has not happened, I have nothing but praise for the restraint and temperance shown by the good people of Luton (South).
