SIR, - I made five visits to Harpenden Post Office in a 10-day period recently - three to send parcels and two fruitless visits to post a letter to Australia. Queuing for parcel dispatches, it took 10, 10 and 15 minutes to reach the counter. For the letter the queue reached the street door on each visit so I gave up. In addition, the search for parking and ensuing walk can take a further 10 minutes to reach the back of the queue.

Three windows were lost when Batford and Southdown Post Offices - well served for parking - were closed. The main office has seven windows of which one is reserved for foreign exchange and often only two or three are open for the main queue. The postal authority must take action to improve this service.

ALAN MILLARD,

Manland Way, Harpenden.
