SIR, - Nice to see the model engineering exhibition in the Alban Arena on the front page (Herts Advertiser, January 24). How about a mention of the many classic London and London Country buses that are arranged to coincide with the exhibition?
These vehicles, which were once an everyday presence on the streets, are now privately owned, restored and maintained at individual expense, to once a year ply the streets of St Albans and district on routes they once served several decades ago, and clearly gave much pleasure to the surprised public.
The crews, many in original uniform and sporting period ticket machines, join in the spirit of serving the community, many having brought their vehicles from far afield. It's quite an achievement to co-ordinate so many different individuals and their vehicles from far-flung corners to carry out what was once a local scenario. So if a few did not quite reach those housing estate backwaters that the original routes once saw - what did it matter? One might understand why when so many have been treated to "traffic calming".
Bravo all those stalwarts who brought them for the pleasure of all. May the event continue to prosper.
