SIR, - Good news for St Albans - our very own 92.6FM baby is doing well. Last year our St Albans community established its own radio station here and on www.radioverulam.com with many listeners in the USA.The company, Verulam Community Radio Ltd - a name chosen in 1992 after approval by John Grimston, our present Earl - is limited by guarantee and is chaired by Clive Glover, one of the founders of the respected Community Media Association (CMA, formerly the Community Radio Association). We are one of 163 community radio stations licensed by OFCOM and ours is one of the few which is entirely run by volunteers, many of whom have been found by the Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) in Catherine Street.Drivers listen to Radio Verulam as far afield as the M1, J5 to Watford or even at Radlett's High Cross, the highest point in Herts. Like the good old Herts Advertiser, the best local newspaper in the county, this media newcomer is designed to serve our own St Albans and district. One London radio station, however, sometimes spews out over the M25. This piratical nuisance is regularly raided by OFCOM staff but they only confiscate the offending equipment found - for example on a tower-block roof. The programmes can even start up again the same day because the pirate studio's location is known only to backers who finance it from allegedly-illegal sources.Happily, this occasional interference will be a thing of the past here because we have improved our transmitter and if the authorities approve, will soon resite our aerial. Merry listening to our special Christmas programmes and a happy 2009 to you and your readers.MICHAEL JAMESON,Treasurer, Verulam Community Radio Ltd.
