SIR, - Are we a two-class society, when we talk about roads and footpaths here in Marshalswick? The roads of Furse Avenue, Dymock Green, Chalkdell Fields and Marten Gate have been down for about 50 years and no maintenance work has ever been done. The same applies to the footpaths.

Weeds and grass grow in the cracks in the road and in places there is nearly more grass than pavement on the footpaths. When slabs get more than an inch variance, they are not levelled up but have tarmac put down to smooth out the difference.

What a contrast we see in The Ridgeway and several small cul-de-sacs in our area, some of which have been built much more recently than our streets named above. I am sure that the powers that be will quote the amount of traffic and numbers of people that use The Ridgeway to justify theirs being done but this cannot apply to the cul-de-sacs.

Herts Highways, please have a look at our area and decide if you think we could do with the same conditions as our near neighbours.

G. WATLEY,

Chalkdell Fields, St Albans.
