SIR - Please - can we have our markets back. Back that is, where they belong, in Market Place. We are told by our MP, Anne Main, that markets have an optimistic future and support local retailers (Herts Advertiser July 30).
Our markets used to support independent retailers in Market Place and draw custom to the High Street and beyond. With the 'creep' away from its historic home, the market now supports only national shops in St Peters Street, indeed a Market Place retailer confirms that Wednesdays are now their worst trading day of the week. The occasional markets are in the Civic Square where there are no retailers to support and actually draw trade away from local shops. In the current economic climate, independent retailers need, and deserve, all the help they can get. The message is simple - Please sir, can we have our markets back!
