SIR - I was interested to read the letter from A. Willoughby (Lest We Forget, Herts Advertiser, November 12), not least because I made a similar point in these pages two years ago - the first time that the new Sunday market clashed with the Remembrance Day commemorations.

I felt then that it was objectionable that the annual Remembrance service (pictured left), which presumably has taken place in St Albans for the past 90-odd years, had been displaced by a few market stalls.

But this year the problem proved even greater, because the market has now grown to extend the whole length of Market Place. This meant that the servicemen, cadets, Scouts, and all the other groups participating in the parade were unable to 'form up' into their marching squads.

Readers may recall that when the layout of St Peter's Street was being altered, markets were temporarily moved across the road to outside the Civic Centre.

If this measure can be taken for the sake of some roadworks, then surely it can also be taken for the sake of an annual service to remember the fallen of two world wars and conflicts since.

The last time I made this practical suggestion, no answer was forthcoming. Perhaps now that I'm not the only one complaining, someone from the council could offer their view.
