SIR - David Gould asks for some advice regarding the maggot infestation in his green recycling bin (Herts Advertiser, September 24).
Maggots only appear if flies have had contact with meat waste, so obviously that must be eliminated. First, have the bin professionally disinfected. Uneaten pet food and other meat (cut up) can be put out for the birds (magpies, crows, etc.) or, if you're so inclined, for foxes.
Anything else should be wrapped tightly in newspaper and placed in the green bin or, even better, in the freezer until the next 'organic' collection.
Alternatively it can be wrapped in a plastic bag and frozen until the next landfill collection. It works for us and hopefully it will for you too.
