SIR - I read with interest the letter (Herts Advertiser, July 23) from one of your readers regarding the sighting of a UFO over our city on July 4. I too, saw the same at the same thing as "Peter" who wrote to you re whatever it was. I was unable to sleep on that night and was looking from my window and saw this bright orange light coming straight towards me. It was round and completely soundless. It was moving rapidly and I found it very creepy as it was making no noise at all. All I could describe it as was a soundless large orange orb. It gave me the creeps and seeing the letter from "Peter" I felt I had to write and hope you would print it.
I assure you "Peter" you weren't seeing things. I am an elderly lady who doesn't always sleep too well and I definitely also saw exactly what you witnessed. I wonder if anyone else who may have been having a sleepless night may have witnessed the same? Whatever it was, it was completely silent but moving very rapidly.

SIR, - Yet more sightings of UFOs or simply Chinese lanterns? On July 24, around 10pm, numerous bright orange orbs were seen flying over the roof tops of the Lower Dagnall Street/Verulam Road area - heading towards the top of the town. I watched these bright orange lights, perfect orange circles of light move at a fast pace, all in the same direction.

Some were in groups of three or four, or singular or in pairs. I overheard one lady in the street screaming how scared she was! I've trawled the internet and don't think these lights look like Chinese lanterns. I could not see any flame flickering. Anyhow, if anyone can enlighten me, that would be great, as this sight caused quite a disturbance in the street!
Sir, - The bright moving light that Peter and his friends saw over Harpenden might well have been the International Space Station, which orbits the earth roughly every hour and a half.
It travels in different orbits, so it is not always visible in this area. To find out possible sightings go the the NASA website and follow the ISS links, where a list of dates, times, trajectories and directions can be found for any given place. Happy viewing - it's well worth seeing.
Sir - I would like to reassure readers disturbed by Peter of Harpenden who thought he saw a UFO while standing outside the Harpenden Arms on July 4. The most likely explanation was that the International Space Station (ISS) was passing overhead on one of its regular orbits.
After the recent addition to its solar panels, the ISS is one of the brightest objects in the sky (often brighter than Venus) and may take several minutes to pass from horizon to horizon although it may disappear suddenly as it passes into the shadow of the Earth.
So don't worry Peter, we are not about to be attacked by aliens!
