SIR, - The break-up of the roads (Herts Advertiser, February 12) cannot easily be remedied if motorists behave like the one I noted at the top of Catherine Street, St Albans. He hooted long and loud at a workman who was trying to fill a pothole with tarmac.
In general, it seems to me that a delegation from UK county councils should visit the northern USA to find out how to build roads which do not break up after one snowfall.
American roads are also better in that they produce much less noise with the passage of vehicles, something which was very noticeable when the surface of Herts roads was covered in snow.
