SIR, - My goodness it's a struggle working with Herts Highways. Getting a job done on time just isn't their thing. In the last financial year - before April 2005 - the local Joint Highways Panel agreed to fund street lighting in some alleyways so that people could walk along them in safety during the dark autumn and winter nights. Residents of Nicholas Close, St Albans, were particularly pleased as they had been pressing for lighting in their local alleyway for some time. The work was scheduled for August/September 2005 so that the lighting would be in place before the clocks changed and the nights drew in. That seemed like a good idea. Well it didn't happen, so the work was rescheduled for October and then rescheduled again for November. The lampposts finally went in right at the end of November and lamps were put in place in December. But are they working? Well no, not yet. After all it's only half way through January now. Trenches have been dug, boxes put in place but any sign of a switch on? No such luck. Local residents get fed up and frustrated because jobs don't seem to be monitored or checked and local councillors get fed up chasing the work. Come on Herts County Council - get the highways people sorted out. CLLR ROMA MILLS, St Albans District Council.
