SIR, - It beggars belief that St Albans District Council are again considering eliminating cars from the city centre (Herts Advertiser, March 19). For goodness sake, the centre is already half "pedestrianised" with wide pavements, boulevards and the narrow streets. Removing cars is facile to any perceived safety improvements as numerous buses, taxis and ambulances, fire engines, police cars (some at speed) and coaches will still use the thoroughfare. Part of Watford is properly pedestrianised but they have the benefit of an inner ring road.
Our traders could be helped if the council stopped time-wasting and in times of recession, only considered critical expenditure in order to reduce rates and council tax next year. Above all it is insensitive to consider this expenditure at a time when local roads are in such a terrible state.
