SIR - It is suggested by Peter Bigg (Herts Advertiser letters, December 3) that a new residential road of "affordable" houses which could be built in the future on Green Belt land in Harpenden, in accordance with Geoff Ackroyd's philanthropic sentiments, be called Ackroyd Rise in recognition of his profession as a master baker.

Use your loaf Mr Bigg. I think you have made a bloomer. In fact your suggestion takes the biscuit. Any such houses will be affordable only to people with plenty of dough, holding a steady job to earn them a crust.

That is unless they work for a government rescued bank, in which case they seem to want to have their cake and eat it, enjoying a self-raising bonus. That provides no crumb of comfort to other would-be house buyers, with no such slice of good fortune, struggling to put bread on the table.
