SIR, - You reported (Herts Advertiser, January 17) the theft of birds from an aviary in Charmouth Road, St Albans. While I am sorry for any upset caused by the loss, I have ask why birds such as green finches, gold finches and redpolls are being kept caged up?
Surely the essence of a bird is flight? To deprive a bird of the open skies is not far removed from cutting the legs off a human being; it denies their essential nature, freedom and mobility.
I would ask all those who keep birds in cages or aviaries to think about what they are doing. I would remind you of the words of William Blake
"To see a robin in a cage
puts all heaven in a rage."
It makes me pretty upset too.
MARY BARTON,
