SIR - I noticed last Thursday that workmen were digging up Victoria Street, St Albans, at the junction with Marlborough Road and temporary traffic lights had been erected. Your readers may remember that this area was excavated last year as part of the resurfacing work on Victoria Street. As a result of delays thus caused, a "temporary surface" was laid down to finish off the resurfacing work to the junction with Lattimore Road in order that Victoria Street would be open for Christmas.

There is a large area near the Upper Marlborough Road junction with Victoria Street so untouched by last year's and current work that it might have been lifted directly out of Beaconsfield Road! It seems to me that, since the school holidays are upon us, now would be a perfect time for Herts Highways to finish the job, bearing in mind that there have been no forewarnings of road closures to that effect.

JOHN F. SYKES,

Grange Street, St Albans.
